Age is an important factor in T20 cricket. At least, it was so when the format was introduced. However, in recent times, T20 has shown that this version isn't restricted only to the youngsters. Experienced professionals and veterans have also done well in the game. IPL has also confirmed this in the past few seasons. The success of CSK in 2018 is valid proof of the same.

In this article, we talk about the average age of each IPL franchise for the upcoming campaign. This shows how the teams have gone about picking their players. 

Chennai Super Kings - 30


The talk is always there about CSK and ageing cricketers. This season as well, the Chennai-based franchise has the highest average. With players like Imran Tahir, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo in the squad, the average age is on the higher side. Nevertheless, there are a few youngsters like Sam Curran and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the team as well.

 Delhi Capitals - 28

The finalists of IPL 2020, Delhi Capitals have an average age of 28 for the upcoming campaign. Although the core of the squad is young, the presence of players such as Amit Mishra has balanced this stat for DC.

Kolkata Knight Riders - 28


KKR has an average age of 28 for IPL 2021. This team is a mix of experience and youth. While Shubman Gill and the Indian pace-bowling department represent the younger section, players like Harbhajan Singh and Dinesh Karthik provide the expertise. 

Mumbai Indians - 27

Mumbai Indians has a near-perfect average age for the upcoming season. Most of their cricketers are aged around 27-28, a slab that usually contains players at their peak. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah fall in this category. There is also the veteran group comprising the likes of Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma.

Punjab Kings - 27


Led by KL Rahul, Punjab Kings have an average age of 27. While Chris Gayle is one of the older players, the likes of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Mohammed Shami are middle-aged in cricketing perspective. Youngsters like Ravi Bishnoi and Ishan Porel lend youthfulness to the unit. Some other younger players are Prabhsimran Singh and Arshdeep.

Rajasthan Royals - 25

Captained by Sanju Samson, Rajasthan Royals have the least average age for IPL 2021. There are plenty of youngsters in this squad. While the captain himself is a rising cricketer, the likes of Kartik Tyagi, Akash Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag have made RR a young team. Of course, RR also has some experienced men such as Ben Stokes and Chris Morris.

Royal Challengers Bangalore - 27

RCB's quartet - Virat, AB, Chahal and Maxwell are established players and are above thirty. The bowlers - Saini and Siraj are close to the average age. The likes of Devdutt Padikkal and Washington Sundar comprise the youngsters' group. This way, RCB has well-roundedness and quite a healthy average age. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad - 28

Sunrisers Hyderabad has a squad that can render itself for both the present and the future. The core of the unit - David Warner, Manish Pandey, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kane Williamson are above thirty. The other component comprises Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad and Virat Singh. There are a few cricketers such as T Natarajan and Sandeep Sharma who are also quite experienced in this format.
